Foil vs Standard Invitation Printing

Choosing between standard print and metallic foil depends on the impact you want your invitations to have. While standard print offers vibrant colour and flexibility, foil creates a luxury finish that reflects light and immediately feels more premium in the hand. For weddings and special events, foil is often chosen to elevate the overall presentation and create a memorable first impression.

Standard Invitation Printing

  • Smooth flat ink finish without reflective detail
  • Strong colour reproduction for photographs and graphics
  • Cost-effective for larger guest lists
  • Ideal for minimalist or modern design styles

Metallic Foil Invitation Printing

  • Reflective metallic finish that catches and reflects light
  • Adds depth and texture that standard ink cannot replicate
  • Creates a luxury, keepsake-quality feel
  • Perfect for highlighting names, dates and wedding details

Foil invitations are particularly popular for weddings, milestone birthdays and premium corporate events because they feel more substantial and special. To compare available finishes before choosing, explore our full range of foil colours.

When combined with thick card stock and soft-touch lamination, metallic foil creates invitations that guests are far more likely to keep as a memento of the occasion.

How Metallic Foil Is Applied to Invitations

Metallic foil invitation printing is a specialist finishing process that takes place after your design has been printed.

Your artwork is first printed in full colour using CMYK digital printing to ensure accurate detail and colour consistency. Once printed, a smooth soft-touch laminate is applied to the surface of the card stock, creating the ideal base for foil application and helping protect the printed design.

A custom metal die is then produced to match your foil artwork. Using controlled heat and pressure, the metallic foil is pressed onto the laminated surface, bonding precisely to the selected areas of your design.

Because foil sits on top of the card rather than soaking into it like ink, it creates a smooth, opaque metallic finish with sharp edges and high reflectivity. This process delivers the crisp detail and luxury shine that make foil invitations feel premium and distinctive.

For a deeper technical explanation, read our guide on how foil printing works.

If you’re supplying print-ready files, we recommend reading our guide on setting up artwork for foil printing before placing your order.

Popular Uses for Metallic Foil Invitations

Metallic foil invitations are often chosen for events where presentation matters. The reflective finish instantly adds a premium feel, making your invitation stand out before it is even opened. Whether you are planning a wedding, milestone celebration or formal event, foil helps create a design that feels more memorable and keepsake-worthy.

Foil Wedding Invitations

Foil wedding invitations are one of the most popular uses for metallic finishes, particularly when combined with minimalist typography, luxury paper stocks and soft-touch lamination. Gold, silver and rose gold foil are commonly used for names, dates and decorative elements, helping wedding stationery feel elegant and timeless. Many couples also choose matching RSVP cards and save the date designs for a consistent set.

Foil Birthday Invitations

Foil birthday invitations are ideal for milestone events such as 18th, 21st, 30th, 40th and 50th birthdays. Metallic foil is often used to highlight key wording such as the age, name or party theme, creating a bold design that feels premium and celebratory. Foil also works particularly well for black, navy or dark colour themes where the metallic shine adds contrast.

Corporate & Event Invitations

Metallic foil invitations are also widely used for corporate and formal events, including product launches, gala dinners, charity evenings and award ceremonies. Foil helps create a polished, high-end look that reflects the importance of the occasion, and is especially effective for branding elements such as logos, titles and event names.

Let our Design Team Work their Magic

We understand not everyone is a professional designer. You may not know your RGB from your CMYK or your bleed from your trap. That's why we have our in-house team on hand to craft the design of your dreams. All designs are individually created by our talented bunch. Yes, that's right, real people!

FAQ's

What Foil Colours Are Available for Invitations?

We offer a wide range of metallic foil finishes for invitation printing, including gold, silver, rose gold, copper and holographic. In total, you can choose from twelve different foil colours, allowing you to match your theme perfectly, whether you want a classic luxury look or something more modern.

See the full range of foil colours here.

Can I Have More Than One Foil Colour on My Invitations?

Yes. You can choose one foil colour per side, meaning double-sided printing allows you to have a different foil colour on the front and back of your invitations. This is ideal for mixing finishes, such as gold on the front with silver or holographic foil on the back.

Can I Order Multiple Designs in One Order?

Yes. If you need more than one design, such as multiple guest name versions, different language invitations, or separate day and evening invites, you can split your order into multiple designs using our calculator. This is a popular option for weddings, VIP guest lists and corporate events.

What Paper Stock Is Best for Writing On?

If you want guests to be able to write on your invitations, we recommend choosing uncoated or recycled paper stocks, as they allow pens to write cleanly without smudging. Silk and gloss stocks feel smoother and more premium, but they are less suitable for handwritten notes.

You can view all available paper options on our foil papers range page.

Are Foil Invitations Laminated?

Yes. If you choose metallic foil on your invitations, that side must be finished with our soft-touch laminate. This is an essential part of the foil process.

The laminate protects the surface during production, allows the foil to bond correctly, and gives your invitations a smooth, premium feel. The result is a durable, scuff-resistant finish with enhanced depth and reflectivity that perfectly complements the metallic effect.

Do Foil Invitations Come With Matching Envelopes?

Envelopes are not included as standard, but we offer a wide range of matching envelopes in multiple colours and sizes. This makes it easy to create a complete invitation set that looks professional and coordinated.

Browse our range of blank coloured envelopes here.

Can You Design My Metallic Foil Invitations for Me?

Yes. If you need help creating your artwork, our design team can assist with layout, print setup and foil positioning to ensure your invitations print sharply and professionally. This is ideal if you are unsure about bleed, safe zones, or how to set up foil artwork correctly.

If you want help before ordering, contact our design team here.
