How to Choose a Paper Stock for Your Gold Foil Business Cards
The paper stock you choose affects the contrast, feel and thickness of your finished gold foil business cards. Foiled sides receive soft touch lamination before the gold foil is applied, while any unfoiled reverse keeps the natural surface of your chosen paper. Colour core paper combines a coloured centre with bright white printable outer layers. This creates a super thick business card with coloured edges and clean white surfaces for your printed design.
We aim to produce and dispatch all orders as quickly and efficiently as possible. As every product is custom printed to order, turnaround times can vary depending on artwork approval, quantity, finishing options and the complexity of the project. More specialist products and finishes, including duplex, triplex, die cut and foiled items, will usually require additional production time due to the extra processes involved.
As you configure your product, the online calculator updates in real time to show an estimated turnaround based on your chosen options. Once you approve your proof, our team will email you a dispatch estimate for your specific order. This estimate covers the production time from proof approval to dispatch and does not include courier delivery time.

Printing the Base Design
Every foiled product begins with the main artwork being printed, which is the first stage in how our digital foil printing process works. This creates the text, imagery and background elements that form the printed base layer. Printing this artwork first allows the metallic details to be positioned accurately as part of the finished design during the later stages.
Applying the Soft Touch Laminate
Once printed, the sheet is covered with an ultra-fine soft touch laminate. Any side receiving foil must be laminated so the toner can adhere cleanly before the metallic foil is applied. The laminate also protects the printed surface, prepares it for the foiling process and adds a smooth, velvety matt finish.
Overprinting the Foil Areas
Toner is then printed over the soft touch laminate using the separately supplied foil artwork. This overprint defines the areas intended to receive foil, such as lettering, linework, logos or selected design details. For every side being foiled, supply one print file and one separate foil file, following our foil artwork setup guide.
Applying the Metallic Foil
Finally, the printed sheets pass through one of our foiling machines, where the chosen metallic foil is bonded to the toner using heat and pressure, bringing the full printed design together. The sheets can then move on to cutting, creasing or any other required finishing.

For products with foil, Spot UV, cutting, creasing, perforation or drilling, we strongly recommend a composite reference page for each printed side to prevent mirrored or misplaced finishing elements and guide our design team when preparing your proof.

Screens and static images cannot reproduce this changing reflection accurately, so a physical metallic foil sample pack is the most reliable way to compare the colour and shine before ordering.
What Is the Difference Between Gold, Rose Gold and Copper Foil?+
Gold foil has a bright yellow-gold tone. Rose gold uses softer pink-copper tones, while copper bronze foil is deeper with stronger orange-red undertones. Gold is the lightest and most recognisably golden of the three, rose gold has a softer appearance, and copper creates a richer, earthier finish.

Can I Print Gold Foil Business Cards on Black or Coloured Paper?+
Yes. Gold foil stays clearly visible on black, coloured and printed backgrounds. Darker backgrounds create stronger contrast, while lighter and natural papers produce a softer effect.
The background changes how prominent the foil appears, but does not impact the colour of the gold itself.
Can I Combine Gold Foil and Full-Colour Printing on the Same Business Card?+
Yes. Your full-colour artwork is printed first, then gold foil is applied wherever you choose in your separate foil artwork. This lets you combine photographs, gradients, colours and backgrounds with metallic logos, lettering or selected details.

Can Gold Foil Be Applied to Both Sides of My Business Cards?+
Yes. You can add gold foil to the front, back or both sides of your business cards. Every foiled side receives soft touch lamination and needs separate printed and foil artwork showing exactly where the gold should appear.
We will send you a digital proof so you can check the layout and foil placement before production.
How Fine Can Gold Foil Details Be on Business Cards?+
Keep gold foil lines and lettering at least 0.5pt (0.18mm) thick, with the same minimum space between separate foil elements.
The foil bonds to a printed toner layer, so details below this size may break up or join together during production.
Clear spacing and slightly bolder shapes will give the finished foil cleaner, more consistent edges.

Further, the shipping process was spectacular. Whereas many US-based businesses were offering week-long SHIPPING times (excluding printing), Aura offers as its default UPS Express shipping for the US. As a result, their shipments have a 2-day transit time (for me, in a smaller city, but would be overnight for major metros), and are guaranteed by UPS. Having traversed the world of e-commerce shipping, nothing brings me greater relief than to see UPS as a shipping option. Additionally, and quite importantly for my fellow US designers, because my order consisted of what could reasonably be described as printed marketing materials, they should not be subject to tariffs. The shipping department at Aura made sure that the customs information was filled out correctly, leaving me with no duties to pay, for which I am eternally grateful. Awed by the quality of my save-the-dates, proceeding with the rest of my suite was a no-brainer, which included a main invite, detail card, and reply card. The turnaround time was similarly rapid, and the quality of the work simply unmatched. To all designers, but especially those in the US, do not let the idea of an international shipper stop you.
