Pros and Cons of Designing Your Own Business Banners
Pros and Cons of Designing Your Own Business Banners
It can be difficult to decide how best to go about creating your business banners and advertisements. You may ask a variety of questions like, can we achieve what we need independently or should we seek expertise from an outside source? Are there additional costs? Will the creative finish be compromised? The truth is there are benefits to both and the only way to fully assess is to evaluate and weigh up what works best for you and your business, step by step.
Independently taking on your own print design and creation:
PROS
- Complete and full responsibility of the project; allowing for creative control over each and every aspect.
- Pride in your own creative input and the achievement of creating something effective (hopefully!)
- You can access the project at all times – there’s no need to liaise through the middle man.
- Save on any outside costs.

CONS
- In a word: inexperience. You may lack creative energy and expertise – and the learning curve can be steep.
- It’s an insular choice. Yes, you may seek help from your core team (if you have one) but you won’t have much opportunity to bounce off fresh energy and ideas from a new source – making the experience limited and not as creatively fulfilling.
- Time management! The time spent on a design and subsequent project will take you away from other responsibilities; be it business or personal.

With this in mind, what could the benefits be of using a design agency?
- Never underestimate the power of partnering with experts that come with vast professional, industry experience. They will have built up a fabulous client list featuring the cream of the industry crop and will most certainly know the top tricks and tools of the trade; information not to be discounted or overlooked.
- You will save on time and won’t have to concern yourself with the project, once you know it's being taken care of by the professionals. This will free up opportunity to focus on other areas of the business, should you need to.
- Costs are something to consider here too. Just in the way that using an agency can ‘up’ the costs, it may also expose a way to strike a deal that will ultimately save costs. The only way you will know is by having a conversation over the phone with your desired agency: explain what you need and see what the company can offer you.
- HOWEVER, the agency may be limited in what they can offer. If the range of what they can provide is too vast, they may lack specialty and your needs and targets could slip through the net. So make sure to research the agency you want to use and asses how best they fit your needs. Remember, don’t underestimate how much you can learn from simply asking the right questions – a good agency will tailor their approach to you.
