The World Of Independent Artists [Customer Spotlight]

Exploring The World Of Independent Artists With Jaizure [Customer Spotlight]

Getting started with printing your own designs as an independent artist can sometimes feel like a big risk. With the outgoing costs, potential for poor quality, and a general lack of experience with printers looming overhead, many digital creators fear to make the jump from screen to page.

This month, we caught up with busy independent artist Jay Ross, otherwise known as Jaizure. As a lover of print and foil since 2021, Jaizure knows a thing or two about bringing digital artworks to life in print. We chatted about her journey as an online artist, as well as her experience with working with Aura Print to create their stunning designs.

Why Don’t We Start Off With Telling Us A Little About Yourself?

“Hi! I’m Jaizure an artist from Phoenix Arizona currently living in Washington state.”

“My favourite thing about art is the freedom it gives you and being able to have a creative outlet for myself. With art, I can draw whatever I feel like within the bounds of my skill. I’m so happy that people like my art enough to own it, put it on their walls, attach pins to their bags, and on rare occasions even get it tattooed!”

Speaking on community and support, Jaizure continues, “I’m very fortunate to be able to build a following and community around my original designs, as well as having very supportive parents. Without their support of me pursuing my dreams, I wouldn’t have been able to kickstart my independent business at all. I owe so much to them.”

To Satisfy My Own Curiosity, Where Did The Name Jaizure Come From?

“The name Jaizure came from a good friend of mine. I was talking to him about how I really wanted a name that was unique and identifiable. At that point, I had no merchandise to sell but I wanted to at last start building my own brand.”

“My friend Teddy, he’s fantastic at just making up fake words. He gave me a list of 10 words he created and Jaizure is the one that resonated with me the most. I’m so happy I had Teddy to help me create Jaizure.”

How Would You Describe Jaizure’s Art Style?

“I would say that my art style isn’t really defined by one thing,” Jaizure says. “I’ve been told it’s very recognisable to those who have seen it before but it’s always a little different.”

“Stylistically, my style is sharp, painterly but not too soft. Content-wise, I think that I’m most defined by the women I draw. I love drawing women and I love drawing for women. Most of [my artworks] have LGBT undertones as well as a tasteful nudity.”

Jaizure continues, “I’ve always been inspired by all the art around me, it’s actually made finding my style quite difficult. I love the highly detailed and painted, I love flat with touch of detail, the bright and the neon, the dark and the macabre, art nouveau, renaissance – I could go on, I’m so in awe of what the artists of the world can create.”

Jaizure explains how they use all this inspiration when creating her own pieces. “I’ll use different elements of different artistic genres depending on the piece I want to create. I’m never too rigid with the art I make.”

How Has It Been Working As A Self Employed Artist?

“Being self-employed is a love hate relationship with the job and yourself. I would never trade this job for anything else, in fact, I couldn’t. I have pretty terrible social anxiety and an introverted personality so when I did work a regular job, it was too much for me. I couldn’t handle it for the long term.”

“That’s not to say [being an independent artist] doesn’t have its pitfalls,” Jaizure says, “It can certainly be stressful a lot of the time. Whether it’s not knowing exactly how much you’ll make, taking a gamble with investments into merchandise - oh and don’t get me started on tax and government paperwork!”

“My biggest highpoint, however, is that because I am the owner of my own business, I can set up my own hours, make sure everything is manufactured just how I want it, the quality is great, and the customers are able to get nice things from me.”

Speaking Of Customers, What Is It Like Being Part Of The Online Art Community?

“The online art community is fantastic.” Jaizure delights, “There are so many wonderful people and artists that I have met who I love so much. I’ve made lifelong friends this way who have helped me grow so much as an artist and we continue to help and support each other throughout our journeys.”

“I would definitely consider the friends I’ve made as one of the best parts of my job.”

As An Independent Artist, It Can Be A Risk Picking Out A Printer. What Do You Think Sets Aura Print Apart For Independent Artists Like Yourself?

“Ever since I started using Aura Print, I honestly have not used any others for my prints! You’ve blown me away with how high quality the prints are. [The prints] feel and look so professional and the foils are exceptional. Any time I’m asked at a convention what printer I use I send them this way.”

Continuing, Jaizure states that her favourite finish is our soft touch laminate.

“My favourite print type and finish is the soft touch for sure! Ever since I started printing with Aura Print, I’ve been getting the soft touch finish. It just adds such a high-quality look and feel to my prints and customers really love it! They’re always complimenting how professional they look.”

What Got You Interested In Using Foil With Your Designs?

“I’ve always really loved foil in art. I think it’s so beautiful to have this pop of shine to really accent a piece. I end up designing a lot of my prints with these elements in mind as they really stand out among the crowd.”

Jaizure explains that from an artwork standpoint, our foiling is the top choice.

“The foiling process is my favourite, especially because I don’t have to add a white space on my print file. There are never any misprints with the white showing. The soft touch combined with the foils is such a beautiful combination.”
