Sustainable Packaging: Essential Guide for a Greener Future

Customers care more about environmental packaging materials than ever before. Sustainability is becoming more and more prominent as we continue to push forward into a cleaner, greener lifestyle, and that includes custom packaging. But how do we know what the jargon actually means? Terms like "eco-friendly", "biodegradable", “green packaging” and "sustainable" get used so frequently without real meaning, so let’s take a moment to unpack what it means for you and your packaging choices.

This guide will cut through all the confusion to help you understand what makes eco-packaging genuinely sustainable. Which materials actually work, and how to choose recyclable packaging that your customers can dispose of easily. We have advice on how to create your own packaging designs if you need more inspiration. We also have free packaging templates you can download which will help you with your designing needs, from simple box designs to more creative uses for your cube designs.

What You’ll Learn – The Good Stuff You Don’t Want to Miss:

  • The differences between recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable packaging

  • Which sustainable packaging materials deliver the best performance

  • How to ensure your packaging is truly recyclable, not just in theory

  • Effective alternatives to plastic packaging that fit current recycling systems

  • What forest certification means and why traceability is crucial

Understanding Different Types of Eco-Friendly Packaging

Not all "green packaging" is created equal. We take a look at the main three methods of breaking down packaging to see what these terms really mean.

Recyclable Packaging: The Practical Choice

Recyclable packaging does exactly what the name suggests. It can be re-cycled into new products if it is collected, processed, and manufactured in the right way. Paper and cardboard recycling is well-established—it works with existing kerbside collections.

Why recyclable works:

  • Goes straight in household recycling bins

  • Keeps materials in circulation for multiple life cycles

  • No special facilities required

  • Consumers already know how to dispose of it

  • Higher actual recycling rates due to simplicity

Paper fibres can be recycled five to seven times before becoming too short to reuse. This means your packaging box can become new paper products again and again, which is far more sustainable than single-use alternatives. Adhesive, metallic foils, and laminations are all separated through the recycling process, (known as filtering) so there’s no need to worry about separating those elements of your packaging. The only aspect of our packaging that is not recyclable, is the plastic window found on our window box packaging. You’ll be happy to know that all our remaining packaging options are plastic free packaging, so they are all suitable for recycling without a problem.

Biodegradable Packaging: The Reality Check

Biodegradable packaging breaks down naturally over time through biological processes. This may sound perfect, but the reality often requires industrial composting facilities, and biodegradable timescales may take years to actually biodegrade.

This can also lead to consumer confusion and potential contamination of recycling streams due to improper disposal. Many consumers do not fully understand where or how to properly dispose of biodegradable materials, often assuming that items labelled biodegradable will simply degrade anywhere, including in regular recycling bins. Consumers often expect that waste management systems or businesses will handle the complexities, so they may disengage from actively educating themselves on proper disposal practices.

For paper-based packaging, recycling is typically the better environmental choice because it extends material life through multiple cycles.

Compostable Packaging: Know the Limitations

Compostable packaging breaks down in specific composting conditions, which is typically industrial facilities or home compost heaps.

Most households don't have access to industrial composting facilities so their compost heaps will not reach temperatures needed for compostable packaging, meaning proper disposal will take much longer.

Recycled packaging is still the preferred environmental choice because it extends material life through multiple cycles. For clean product packaging, recyclable beats compostable in practicality and simplicity for the consumer and the environment.

Biodegradable is often seen as the worst of the eco-friendly options available, with many variables, and microplastic issues if not managed correctly.

Understanding Forest Certification Standards

Packaging sustainability extends beyond simply recycling, as it ensures that resources are replenished, workers are protected and ecosystems are preserved. This is why Forest Certification carries a substantial weight in the process of recycling, sustainability and eco-friendly materials. It’s caring for the entire lifecycle, from nurturing and planting trees, to cultivating and ensuring that the people involved are treated fairly, and the resources are managed responsibly.

The Two Main Certification Systems

When researching sustainable packaging materials, you'll encounter two primary forest certification standards:

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council):

The most widely recognised global certification. FSC-certified materials can be traced from forest to end product, ensuring responsible forestry practices throughout the supply chain.

Businesses cannot legally claim to be FSC-Certified without accreditation from independent certification bodies.

FSC certification requires an independent third-party audit conducted by an FSC-accredited certification body to verify that the business complies with FSC standards. Only after passing this audit can a business receive genuine FSC certification.

PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification):

The world's largest forest certification system, particularly strong in Europe. PEFC promotes sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification. Like FSC, PEFC also requires compliance audits to ensure personnel, records and PEFC standards are adhered to.

Both systems have similar goals: sustainable forestry, traceability, worker protections, and ecosystem preservation.

When choosing sustainable packaging, look for materials certified by either standard—both indicate genuine commitment to responsible sourcing. Companies who claim these standards should have a certification number to verify their accreditation, inclusive of validity dates.

Aura Print is proud to support sustainable forestry by carefully sourcing materials exclusively from FSC and PEFC certified suppliers. While Aura Print itself does not hold FSC or PEFC certification, our commitment to environmental responsibility is reflected through this trusted supply chain. This approach enables us to offer high-quality print products made from responsibly sourced materials, helping customers make eco-conscious choices with confidence.

Why Forest Certification Matters

Traceability

Every link from forest to your packaging is verified and documented.

Worker protections

Fair wages, safe conditions, and proper training throughout the supply chain.

Wildlife and ecosystem protection

Habitats are preserved and biodiversity is maintained.

Zero deforestation

Forests aren't shrinking. For every tree harvested, more are planted.

Community respect

Local and indigenous community rights are honoured.

Types of Certified Materials

100% certified virgin fibre

New paper made from responsibly harvested trees. Highest quality and strength. Look for "FSC 100%" or "PEFC Certified" labels.

Recycled content

Materials recovered from post-consumer or post-industrial sources. Reduces demand for virgin materials.

Mixed sources

Combination of certified virgin fibre and recycled content. Often labelled as "FSC Mix" or similar. Balances sustainability with performance—this approach is increasingly common in premium packaging.

Our Approach: Sustainable Box Packaging That Works

We specialise in packaging sustainability. This means we make our packaging with materials from responsibly managed forests. Our recycled packaging boxes combine environmental responsibility with great performance. This means you can be confident that your packaging not only supports sustainable forest growth but also upholds high-quality standards, ensuring exceptional durability and performance without compromising on environmental responsibility.

Why We Choose Recyclable Over Other Options

Recycling compatibility

Our environmentally friendly packaging materials work with existing kerbside recycling services. Typically everyone understands the simple message of ‘put it in the recycling bin’. A higher understanding means higher actual recycling rates. There are no additional steps required by consumers, so it’s a very simple process that can be easily adhered to.

Extended lifecycle

Recycling allows your packaging to have multiple life cycles. This approach is more environmentally friendly than single-use options, even when those end up being composted rather than landfilled.

Performance without compromise

Robust, premium-quality packaging that protects your products while maintaining full environmental responsibility. You can still enjoy vibrant colour schemes, elegant foiling and bespoke finishes, all delivered with exceptional quality that does not impact sustainability.

Recycled Content in Our Packaging

Our paperboard includes recycled paper packaging alongside virgin fibre from certified sustainable sources. This combination gives you:

  • Environmental benefits of recycled content

  • Strength and durability of virgin fibre

  • The perfect balance of sustainability and performance

  • Premium quality without compromise

Packaging made from 100% recycled paper can sometimes lack the strength needed for a premium presentation. Pure virgin fibre, meanwhile, doesn’t fully utilise existing materials in circulation. Our approach combines both so you get the sustainability credentials that matter, along with the durability your products need.

Plastic-Free Packaging: The Full Picture

Our packaging is plastic-free by default, with one optional exception being our window box packaging. This product features a small transparent plastic window which is not recyclable.

To ensure you receive plastic free packaging, you can request boxes without windows, which maintains full recyclability.

Another alternative is to order window-shaped cut-outs, which allow your customers to view your products while maintaining full recyclability. Speak with our team if you’d like window cut outs instead of plastic windows, and we can certainly arrange that for you.

Other "plastic-free" alternatives use plant-based plastics (PLA) that require industrial composting facilities, which is a service not typically available to most consumers. Our approach is much easier for consumers; paperboard from certified sources that goes directly into standard household recycling, supporting sustainable forest management and responsible tree planting to ensure the long-term health of our forests.

Recycling Revealed: The Truth Behind What’s Actually Recyclable

Our Packaging: Fully Recyclable

Here's what happens when you recycle our boxes:

  1. The boxes go in your household recycling bin

  2. Once collected, they arrive at your local recycling facility

  3. The packaging is mixed with water to create pulp

  4. Paper fibres are separate and are recovered for future use

  5. Inks, foils, adhesives and thin coatings are filtered out and removed

  6. Clean paper fibres become new paper products

Key point: The certified paperboard is fully recycled, while surface treatments are removed during the pulping stage of processing to ensure purity. This means you don’t need to remove foils, inks or adhesives before recycling. For simplicity, pop it all in your recycling bin. The paperboard fibres get recovered and reused.

What You Can Recycle (No Extra Steps Needed)

✅ Matt lamination (removed during pulping)

✅ Printing inks (filtered out during de-inking)

✅ Foil accents (separated and removed during screening)

✅ Adhesive tape (screened out in purification)

✅ Certified paperboard (recycled into new products)

What Requires Customer Action

❌ Plastic windows (if present, must be removed before recycling the paperboard)

Sustainable Food Packaging: What Works

Unlike biodegradable packaging which can break down unpredictably and sometimes leave harmful residues or microplastics, our eco-friendly food packaging is perfectly suited for dry, shelf-stable food products. Unlike some biodegradable food packaging, which may degrade faster when exposed to moisture, our solutions maintain their structure until the customer is ready to use the product.

Pair our sustainable food packaging with appropriate inner packaging such as food-safe bags or product wrapping if you require moisture barriers. Our boxes provide a beautiful and fully customisable branded exterior while your inner packaging handles your food safety requirements.

This approach gives you eco-friendly packaging materials on the outside with functional food packaging on the inside. The perfect combination for your food packing needs.

We've created sustainable food packaging solutions for:

  • Artisan biscuits and baked goods

  • Confectionery, chocolates and truffles

  • Premium floral teas and coffees

  • Dried fruits, nuts and cereal grains

  • Spices and seasonings

  • Gourmet dried pasta, noodles and ramen

  • Gift food hampers and bundles

Important Considerations

Our packaging is not suitable as a primary food safety barrier for fresh, frozen, or highly perishable foods. The packaging board is food-safe for direct contact with dry foods but is not moisture-proof. If you require packaging solutions for foods with high moisture content, you will need additional moisture-resistant materials such as plastic inserts, films, or bags to provide the necessary barrier to maintain freshness, prevent contamination, and ensure food safety.

FAQ's

Does Sustainable Packaging Cost More?

Our prices remain competitive with non-sustainable options. Responsibly sourced materials are increasingly standard in the industry, so there's usually no price premium. Using the correct sized packaging often saves money on shipping costs, and offers the best experience for the consumer.

Will Recyclable Packaging Protect My Products?

For most products, yes. Our paper board is strong and durable. Our packaging is designed to be product packaging, not shipping packaging, so be sure to use additional outer packaging for courier delivery.

Can I Call My Packaging "Eco-Friendly"?

Yes, you can call your packaging eco-friendly! It’s best to be specific rather than vague, so you can honestly state:

  • Packaging is made with materials from certified sustainable forests.

  • Paperboard is fully recyclable in kerbside collections.

  • We source materials through suppliers who follow responsible forestry practices to ensure ethical and sustainable sourcing.

Specificity builds trust more than general "eco-friendly" claims. By using earth-friendly packaging you are actively reducing waste and protecting the environment without compromising product quality. That’s something to be proud of!

Can I Ship Products Directly in Your Packaging?

Our packaging is designed for product presentation, not external shipping. To maximise efficiency, use our boxes as product packaging for items sold in-store, inner packaging inside shipping boxes or gift boxes handed directly to customers.

For posting or courier delivery: Always use additional protective outer packaging (brown corrugated boxes or weatherproof mailers). Think of our packaging as the beautiful product box your customer opens. Use separate protective packaging for the journey.

What's Better: Recyclable or Biodegradable?

For paper-based packaging, recyclable is typically the better environmental choice as materials remain in use for multiple cycles. This means there is a lower carbon footprint for recycled materials versus creating virgin products. Additionally, the infrastructure for recycling is already in place, well maintained, and customers understand how to correctly separate materials to reduce landfill waste.

Biodegradable packaging does break down naturally but usually ends the material’s lifecycle after one use. This means more virgin resources are needed to replace it, resulting in a higher carbon footprint. Most customers don’t have access to the facilities needed to dispose of biodegradable materials properly.

If customers are unsure how to dispose of these materials, they risk contaminating recycling streams. This can harm recycling efforts and reduce the quality of recycled products.

How Do I Know the Materials Are Actually Sustainable?

Look for materials with independent forest certification. The two main standards are:

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council): Global certification ensuring materials are traced from responsibly managed forests. Look for FSC 100% (all virgin fibre), FSC Mix (combination of certified and recycled content), or FSC Recycled labels.

PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification): The world's largest forest certification system. PEFC-certified materials meet strict sustainability standards and are independently audited.

What to look for:

  • Independent certification from recognised forestry standards (FSC or PEFC)

  • Supply chain traceability from forest to finished product

  • Transparency about sourcing and materials

  • Specific claims rather than vague "eco-friendly" statements

Aura Print works with suppliers who maintain independent forest certification (FSC and PEFC) and provide full documentation of sustainable sourcing. This means every box can be traced back to certified sustainable forest sources.

Do I Need to Remove Anything Before Recycling?

Only plastic windows (if present) need to be removed before packaging is recycled. Everything else (lamination, foils, toner, adhesive) gets filtered out during the recycling process. This means you don’t need to worry about separating them when you recycle!

The paperboard fibres get recovered and turned into new products.

Making the Switch to Sustainable Packaging UK

Switching to sustainable packaging is easier than it sounds. With UK regulations like Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) starting in 2025, businesses are now responsible for the full cost of managing their packaging waste. Start by choosing recyclable or responsibly-made materials and reducing excess packaging. These small changes can lower waste, cut costs, and help your business stay compliant.

Step 1: Evaluate your packaging needs

What products are you packaging? What size works best? Do you need windows or special features? We offer a wide range of eco-friendly packaging UK options to help your brand reduce waste while maintaining a premium look.

Step 2: Choose sustainable materials for your packaging

Paperboard from certified sustainable forests offers the best balance of sustainability, performance, and recyclability for most applications.

Step 3: Think about environmentally friendly disposal

The most sustainable packaging is packaging that actually gets recycled. Choose options that work with an existing infrastructure for a seamless cycle of recycling.

Step 4: Test before scaling

Start with smaller quantities to test with your products and get customer feedback. We offer a minimum order quantity of 50 boxes, so you can test and trial before you scale up!

Why Choose Recyclable Packaging

  • Transparency: You know exactly what your packaging is made from and how customers can dispose of it. No greenwashing and no vague claims. It’s all straight forward and sustainable.

  • Performance: Sustainable doesn't mean flimsy. Quality paperboard from certified sources is durable, professional, and protects products properly.

  • Customer convenience: Everyone knows how to recycle cardboard. Simple disposal means higher actual recycling rates.

  • Genuine sustainability: Multiple life cycles through recycling beat single-use alternatives, even biodegradable ones.

  • Traceable sourcing: Materials from independently certified forests mean you can actually verify sustainability claims.
