Metallic Foil Business Cards With Reflective Detail
Metallic foil business cards add an opaque, light-reflective finish to logos, typography and selected design elements. They give brands a level of shine and contrast that standard CMYK print cannot reproduce, helping important details stand out with greater emphasis and visual definition.

How to Choose a Paper Stock for Your Foil Business Cards
The paper stock you choose affects the look, feel and thickness of your finished business cards. Foiled sides receive soft touch lamination before the foil is applied, while any unfoiled reverse keeps the natural characteristics of your chosen paper.

Can I Print in Full Colour and Add Metallic Foil to My Business Cards?
Yes. Every foil business card begins with full colour (CMYK) printing before the metallic foil is applied. This allows photographs, gradients, coloured backgrounds and branding to be combined with reflective foil highlights on the same design.
The foil is applied using a separate artwork layer, so only the areas you specify, such as logos, text, borders or illustrations, receive the metallic finish. The rest of the design remains printed in full colour.
For the best results, keep foil for the elements you want to draw attention to rather than covering the entire design. Combining full colour printing with metallic foil creates contrast, making important details stand out without overwhelming the finished business card.
Can I Print on Both Sides of My Foil Business Cards?
Your business cards can be single or double-sided, with metallic foil on either or both sides. You can combine blank areas, full colour printing and foil in the arrangement that best suits your design.
If you choose foil on both sides, each side receives soft touch lamination and is foiled separately. If you choose foil on one side only, the reverse remains unlaminated, so it keeps the natural characteristics of your chosen paper stock and may be easier to write on.
Can I Use Different Foil Colours on Each Side of My Business Cards?
You can choose one foil colour for the front and a different foil colour for the reverse of your business cards. This allows each side to serve a different purpose while maintaining a consistent overall design.
For example, you might use gold foil on the front for your logo and silver foil on the reverse for contact details, or combine holographic foil with a more traditional metallic finish.
Each side requires its own foil artwork file showing only the elements to receive foil. During production, each side is foiled separately to ensure accurate placement and a consistent finish.
Why Do Foil Business Cards Need Soft Touch Lamination?
Soft touch lamination provides the surface needed for the foil to bond correctly, so it is required on every foiled side. It also protects the printed artwork and gives the finished business card a smooth, velvety surface.
On single-sided foil business cards, the reverse remains unlaminated, so you can still see and feel the natural characteristics of your chosen paper stock.
Can I Add Rounded Corners to Foil Business Cards?
Rounded corners are available for foil business cards and can be applied to one, two, three or all four corners. They provide a softer appearance while helping reduce wear to the corners during everyday handling.
Rounded corners work well with both simple and detailed foil designs, making them a popular choice for premium business cards, appointment cards and loyalty cards.
When designing your artwork, keep important text, logos and foil details within the safe area so they remain clear after trimming and corner rounding.
Can I Use Recycled Paper for Foil Business Cards?
Metallic foil can be applied to our recycled paper stock, making it a popular choice for businesses looking to combine sustainability with premium print.
The recycled stock contains visible recycled paper flecks throughout the sheet. These remain part of the finished card, giving it a more natural appearance while the metallic foil provides contrast against the paper.
If you choose single-sided foil, the reverse also retains the natural texture of the recycled stock, making it suitable for writing where required.
How Durable Are Foil Business Cards?
Foil business cards are designed for everyday handling and benefit from the protection provided by soft touch lamination. The laminate helps protect the printed artwork while providing the surface required for the metallic foil.
For business cards that will be carried daily, keeping them in a wallet, card holder or protective case will help preserve both the foil and the laminated finish.
How Small Can Foil Text and Fine Details Be?
Keep foil lines, lettering and gaps between separate foil elements at least 0.5pt (0.18mm) thick. Finer details may not leave enough toner for the metallic foil to bond cleanly, which can lead to small gaps or joined elements.
This applies to fine borders, small text, script fonts, detailed logos and delicate illustrations. Serif typefaces and handwritten lettering may need slightly thicker strokes where their finest parts fall below the minimum.
We check supplied artwork before proofing and will flag anything that may need adjusting. See our foil artwork setup guide for full file preparation, spacing and alignment guidance.
Can Large Areas of My Design Be Foiled?
Large solid areas can be foiled, but they should be used thoughtfully. Metallic foil works best when it highlights key design elements such as logos, typography or selected graphics rather than covering the entire business card.
Very large foil areas require more toner beneath the foil and may show minor variations that are less noticeable on smaller design elements. Breaking large areas into patterns, shapes or highlighted features often creates a stronger visual result while making better use of the reflective finish.
If you're aiming for maximum impact, using foil selectively usually creates greater contrast than covering every available area.
How Do I Prepare Artwork for Foil Business Cards?
Supply the printed design and foil elements on separate pages for each foiled side. Show every foil element in solid 100% black, including text, logos and linework.
We also recommend including a composite reference page showing how the print and foil should appear together. This helps our design team prepare your proof accurately and reduces the risk of mirrored or misplaced foil elements.
