Foil Colors for Printing
How to choose the right metallic foil for your project
Metallic foil color plays a major role in how your finished print looks and feels. The same design can appear classic, bold, modern or playful depending on the foil shade you choose and how it’s used within your layout.
At Aura Print, we offer an expanding range of 12 premium metallic foil colors, giving you the flexibility to match your brand palette, paper stock and product type.
This guide explores the foil colors available and how to use each one effectively.
Foil colors are part of our broader metallic foil printing range and can be paired with different foil paper stocks and materials depending on the finish you want to achieve.
Why Foil Color Choice Matters
Foil sits on top of the paper as an opaque metallic layer, so the foil shade itself remains consistent. Your color choice influences:

How premium, modern or playful the design feels

Readability of fine details and small text

Visual balance between foil areas and printed elements

How the design performs under different lighting conditions
Matching Foil Colors to Paper
Because foil is opaque, the paper color does not tint the foil itself. However, the paper you choose does affect:

The contrast around the foil

The overall feel of the finished piece

How sharp the foil edges appear depending on coating and texture
Smooth stocks such as silk and gloss paper, along with Colorplan and colored core options, typically produce the sharpest foil edges. Uncoated and recycled stocks create a softer, more tactile finish.

Foil Colour FAQ's
Do Foil Colors Look Different on Colored Paper?
Foil is opaque, so the paper color does not change the foil color itself. What does change is the overall design contrast, since the paper color surrounds the foil in non-foiled areas and influences how bright or bold the foil appears.
Can Foil Colors be Mixed on the Same Design?
We apply printed color first, then add one foil color on top. We do not mix ink with foil to create additional foil colors. You can have one foil color per side, and you can choose a different foil color on the reverse side if you are printing both sides.
What Foil Colors are Available?
Our metallic foil printing range comprises of twelve metallic foil colors, including gold, silver, rose gold, copper, pink, violet, red, teal, blue, green, black chrome and holographic finishes. Each foil color is applied as an opaque metallic layer and produces a distinct look depending on how it is used in the design.
Which Paper Works Best With Foil Colors?
Foil colors perform best on smooth paper stocks such as silk, gloss, Colorplan and colorcore, which give clean edges and strong reflectivity. Uncoated, recycled and packaging materials create a softer, more tactile finish while still keeping the foil color consistent, as foil is opaque.
