Sales Tax, Import Duty & Tariffs

Canadian Import Duty

Any item with a value exceeding CAN$20 mailed to Canada may be subject to the Goods and Service Tax (GST) and/or duty. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) calculates any duties owing based on the value of the goods in Canadian funds.

Understanding Duties and Tariffs

The application of tariffs, duties and taxes is highly specific to the product type and the declared value of the shipment. While many printed paper items may be exempt from tariffs (under the Canada-UK trade treaty), we recommend reviewing the official classification to confirm.

Canadian Tax for Imports

If you import goods, you may have to pay the GST/HST. How this tax is applied depends on the specific goods or service, whether you are a resident or non-resident of Canada, the province you reside in, and whether you are registered for the GST/HST.

For Customs Processing, the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) or the shipping carrier (UPS) will assess and collect this tax directly from you before releasing the goods.

The standard federal GST rate is 5%. Depending on your province or territory, this is either charged alongside Provincial Sales Tax (PST) or combined into a single Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).

What Other Charges are There?

In addition to any potential tariff, duty or tax, the carrier may also charge an administrative fee for customs clearance for shipments entering Canada.

Entry Preparation Fee: When shipped by air, this is almost always included free of charge.

Disbursement Fee: This is the fee UPS charges you for paying due tax in advance to the Canadian Government. In turn, UPS charge 2.7% of the advanced tax amount, with a minimum fee of $10.

ICOD (Import Collect on Delivery) / Transaction Fee: UPS charges an additional fee for collecting money from the customer at the doorstep. This $5 fee can be avoided by paying online before the package is delivered. When UPS clears the shipment and identifies that sales tax is owed, the tracking page on UPS.com will update with a "Pay Now" link.
