Wanting to know what size is a business card? Unfortunately, that’s pretty much like asking how long is a piece of string, there is no simple answer. The world of business cards is incredibly diverse, with cards being seen in a variety of different shapes, sizes, colors, paper types, paper weights – you get the point.

When deciding on your business card measurements, you should consider the goal of getting your business cards printed in the first place. Are you looking to gain new business? Get your foot in the door? Impress your potential customers?

Whatever the reason for getting your business cards printed, the first question your printer will ask is “how big is a business card for your company?” Below, we have outlined the different sized printed business cards we have available and how they can be used for your new prints.

What is the standard business card size?

The main goal behind getting yourself some new business cards is to hand them out to your customers. But what happens when the business card dimensions you have chosen is too big to fit within your customers purses and pockets?

This is where standard business card sizes come into play. The standard business card family is designed with your customers, or more frankly your customers wallets, in mind. With these cards, your customers will have no excuse not to take home your luscious business cards to admire later.

What are the dimensions of a business card?

So, how big is a business card based on the standard business card dimensions? We’ve included this helpful table of our standard business card size in inches and business card size in mm, to help you when it comes to create your artwork.

Business Card Size

Width x Height in in

Width x Height in mm

Standard Business Card (Landscape) 3.5x2in 89x51mm
Standard Business Card (Portrait) 2x3.5in 51x89mm
Small Square Business Card 2.5x2.5in 64x64mm

When you come to design your own business cards, we always recommend using inches or millimetres when setting up your document. Not only will this ensure your artwork matches our printing guidelines, it will also ensure that your artwork automatically adjusts to the right resolution required for print. The last thing you want is to design some beautiful business cards using pixels, for the design to then appear pixelated when being set up for print.

Unconventional business card measurements

Although standard sized business cards are more commonly seen, there is no reason as to why your cards should have to conform to these measurements. Instead, why not experiment with different shapes and sizes to help show off your business’s true personality. Dip your toe in the water with a rounded corner business card or dive straight into the deep end with a custom shape die cut business card.

Whichever business card shape or size you choose, you should always remember to link it to your business. Running a coffee shop? A coffee cup shape would be a better choice than an ice cream (unless you sell ice cream too, in that case you do you). Another thing to consider is the content of your business card. Custom shaped business cards can often be limited in the space available for your text. Make sure to choose a shape that will fit your design elements inside.

With custom shaped business cards, our standard business card size templates are not going to meet your requirements. If you do find yourself unsure as to how to size your artwork whilst being suitable for print, drop us a quick email and we can work with you to put your mind at ease.
