A Quick Guide To Hand Out Flyers

Does Handing Out Flyers Work?

In short, choosing to hand out flyers is a great way to take advantage of an offline marketing channel when planning an event or promotion. When done right, using promotional leaflets and foil printed flyers can often be more cost-effective than using online ads. We strongly believe that flyer printing is best used to raise awareness of events locally, and that follow up leaflet drops need to also be planned as part of your offline campaign.

Best Places To Distribute Flyers

Now that we’ve touched upon how handing out pamphlets can be beneficial to your business, let’s discuss where the best place to hand out flyers is.

#1 Posting Your Flyers Through Letterboxes

When thinking about distribution, your first thought probably goes to posting them through a letterbox. This is a perfect approach as you can target the leaflet design to different postcodes or areas. You can also get a feel for how interested that area could be in your event.

For example, higher-income areas may be less interested in discount promotions compared to low-income areas. At the very least, directly posting your flyers in this method guarantees you’re targeting the local areas.

#2 Get Yourself Out On The Street

Handing your flyers out on the street can often be for the brave. Don’t let that put you off though, the greatest benefit of directly handing your promotional handouts to the public is you can start a dialogue.

The people who you’re able to start a conversation with are much more likely to engage with what your flyer says, especially if you’re charismatic and upbeat about it. This method we’d say is much more suited to offers or events that are exciting versus handing out takeaway flyers.

#3 Local Business Countertops & Receptions

While placing a stack of your flyers on a countertop or reception area requires asking for permission to do so, it’s often a very good way to save time, while still ensuring you’re targeting the local area.

Sometimes hotels or bed and breakfasts are great for displaying flyers as they’ll have designated stands just for local events. It’s also in both your interests as you can spread the word about your event and the hotel has something in the area to let its guests know about. Just make sure your adverts can be seen and aren’t hidden away in a corner.

How Many Flyers Should I Order?

Now you have an idea about how to hand out flyers, you’ll need to know how many you need to print. We have a blog all about leaflet response rates that you might find useful. The average response rate is around 3%, so if you need to get 100 people interested in an event, you’ll need to be handing out around 3500 pamphlets.

How Many Flyers Can You Hand Out In An Hour?

Now we’ve discussed how many flyers you’ll need, it’s time to consider how long it will take to deliver all of them.

On average, you can expect to deliver around 70-100 flyers through letterboxes per hour. If handing out in the street, that number could be up to 150 per hour. It all depends on how busy or built up the area is.

Delivering your flyers to an apartment block with all the mailboxes in the reception is incredibly quick whereas rural areas may involve using a bicycle to deliver your leaflets.

Is It Illegal To Hand Out Flyers?

In most cases, it’s perfectly acceptable to hand out your leaflets, however, there are some guidelines you’ll need to lookup. The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 was introduced to prevent litter from leaflet distribution on town centres.

If you plan to hand out flyers in your local town, it’s best to contact the council in that area to get clarification on if the area is regulated or not. It’s completely legal to post your metallic leaflets through letterboxes or leave them at stores, pubs, or hotels though.

Are Flyers Still Worth Using?

If you’ve made it this far, you might be questioning if using flyers is right for your business or event. While online media has made everything more accessible, for promoting in local areas, there’s nothing like printed flyers that can grab attention and directly target the exact potential customers or households you want.
